Booking.com doesn’t list Damascus — how did you actually book a hotel?
French passport. Booking, Hostelworld, Agoda: empty or nonsense. A VPN did not magically create a calendar.
I want something inside the old city for the first night so I am not bargaining in the dark off a DAM taxi. WhatsApp in English? Walk-in? Does the visa window even want a reservation, or is that a tour-office story?
I am not buying a package just so I have a bed.

Booking.com is not how this city sells rooms. Hostelworld printed zero Damascus hostels when we last checked. A VPN does not create a calendar.
Find the building on Maps. WhatsApp or email: your name, dates, the pin. English often works; if they reply only in Arabic, send the dates and the pin again. Or walk in. Independents in 2026 did all three. You do not need a tour voucher for the visa. A paper confirmation is comfort at the border, not a law.
Sleep inside the walls if you can — around the Umayyad Mosque or Bab Touma. Cheap beds about US$10–20 in 2025–2026 notes; mid-range often US$30–90; a courtyard WhatsApp can come back at US$100. Look at the room. Cash at the desk. Passport for the register, then take the booklet back.
Pin the first night if you land late. After that, walking in is ordinary.

I messaged three courtyards off Maps from Beirut, the night before. Two answered on WhatsApp the same evening, one only in Arabic — I sent the dates and the pin again and got a yes and a price. I paid a bit more than the door rate later in the week; I treated the extra as the booking, not a scam.
Mid-week I walked into a second place with no reservation and slept. Passport at the desk, a minute, booklet back. Booking.com stayed empty the whole time I was there. I would still pin night one if you land after dark.
