Does Airalo work in Syria or do I need a Syriatel SIM?

Australian phone, unlocked, eSIM already sitting on Airalo from other trips. Every generic “Syria eSIM 2026” page still pushes Airalo or Holafly as if this were Lisbon. I need WhatsApp and a map. Apparently the taxi app wants a local number. Can I register a foreign passport at a proper Syriatel or MTN branch, or is that a hotel upsell? Airport kiosk — real, or folklore?

Do not plan Airalo. Comparison pages through 2026 still had no working Syria product at the big international eSIM shops. Activate-before-you-fly is the wrong instruction here. Buy the line after the stamp, at an official Syriatel or MTN branch. Foreign passport with the new entry stamp, unlocked phone, write the hotel address — the form asks. Street stalls sell top-ups; they often cannot register you. The airport kiosk exists some days and is shut after overnight flights. Taxi, sleep, branch after breakfast. We will not publish one tourist price. Hotel desks have charged foreigners about US$30–40 for a bundle; branded shops can be cheaper. Pay, receipt, open WhatsApp before you leave the glass. That local number is how YallaGo works. If the first branch says no, another official shop the next morning — not a souq kiosk.

Airalo had nothing I could actually use. I went to a Syriatel service centre the morning after the stamp — the hotel told me which one was registering foreigners that day. Passport, stamp, address of the hotel written down. Physical card. I tested WhatsApp at the counter and only then left. A stall in the souq offered a “ready” line. I didn’t. Airport kiosk was closed when I landed at night. Do not make that your only plan. I paid more than a few dollars and less than a panic price; I will not freeze the number because the next receipt will differ. Ask new pounds or old if they quote SYP.
