Will Turkish Airlines board me to Damascus without a visa number?

German passport, IST–DAM late October on Turkish Airlines. Online check-in will not finish unless I type a visa number. I mailed the Berlin mission twice. Nothing. Phone just rings. I keep reading that Syria stamps on arrival and that you pay cash at the desk. Fine — that is not what the airline form is asking. I do not want to find this out at the gate with a suitcase. Has anyone actually been boarded on TK this summer with no pre-issued visa? If they bounce me, is shifting the same week to Beirut the sane backup?

The Syrian stamp and the Istanbul check-in desk are different jobs. Most German passports pay cash at DAM or at Masnaa and walk. That does not force Turkish Airlines to board you if their screen wants a visa number. Independents this summer still report TK, AJet, Royal Jordanian and DanAir applying visa-on-arrival correctly. Flydubai is the one that publishes its own “OK to board” list and has bounced people. I will not promise your October flight. If online check-in demands a number, go to the airport with the passport. Get the airline to say in writing they will board a visa-on-arrival passenger. If they will not, do not argue Timatic at the gate. Change the ticket to Beirut or Amman and use the land window. Berlin will not issue you a tourist visa. That mission is not the desk that stamps.
