Is Syria safe to visit as an ordinary tourist right now?
Italy. The advisory still says do not go. Two friends who went this year walked the old city and took the garage to Aleppo and came back talking about tea, not gunfire.
I am not looking for “perfectly safe.” I need the difference between a week on the usual tourist line — Damascus, maybe Homs, Aleppo — and treating the whole map as open. Night walks? Checkpoints? Would you send a first-timer in September, or am I being stupid?

I live here. I will not write “perfectly safe.” I also will not paste a Level 4 advisory over a week inside the walls.
The usual visitor line — Damascus, Homs as a sleep, Krak, Palmyra as a day if they let you, Aleppo — is daily life with checkpoints and a news week that can turn. Northeastern Syria, Raqqa, Hasakah are not that line. Do not build a first trip on a pin in the east.
Walk the old city in daylight like a guest. Night: short, streets you already know, not a performance. Women have done this independently in 2026; that is a note, not a slogan. Your insurance may refuse a trip against your ministry’s advice — read the policy before you book.
If the week turns, Beirut and Amman are the exits. I would send a careful first-timer on that circuit. I would not send them to treat the whole map as a guidebook.
