Syria travel insurance
A high-street policy usually will not pay. Get Syria named in writing, with medical and evacuation. Still carry cash for a clinic.

Checked 13 September 2026 against GOV.UK (Syria page still current 13 September 2026, last updated 2 September 2026; Foreign travel insurance last updated 2 August 2024), the US Syria advisory, Smartraveller, travel.gc.ca, Allianz Assistance UK, World Nomads UK/US/CA, AXA Assistance France, Auswärtiges Amt, QNB Arabic and English, a Jazeera Airways Arabic add-on, IATI’s Syria blog and the comments on it, High Risk Voyager, and Syrian Guides Traveler Gold wording. Does travel insurance cover Syria?
Usually not. A high-street annual policy that says worldwide still follows official against-travel advice, or a sanctions list that names Syria. You need written confirmation that Syria is on the certificate, that emergency medical treatment and evacuation are in, and that travelling against that advice does not void the policy. Then pack. The stamp is on Visa on arrival. This page is whether the policy pays.
Will a high-street policy pay?
United Kingdom: the FCDO advises against all travel. GOV.UK, still current 13 September 2026, says your insurance could be invalidated if you go anyway. World Nomads UK: no cover where the FCDO advises against all travel, unless they confirm in writing. Allianz Assistance UK: no cover to any destination the FCDO has advised against all travel to, whatever the reason for the trip. If you still go, GOV.UK says get appropriate cover for the itinerary, the activities, and emergency expenses. Carry the policy number and the 24-hour assistance number.
United States: visa on arrival is a separate fact — Level 4 is not the stamp. The advisory tells you to buy insurance before you fly, to check evacuation, medical, and cancellation, and to carry cash: hospitals often want payment up front; credit cards are generally not accepted. Medicare and Medicaid do not pay abroad. Most US health plans do not. World Nomads USA, updated 3 March 2026, lists Syria among sanctioned countries it cannot cover. Other US travel products follow the same kind of list. Ask your own insurer in writing.
Australia: Smartraveller says you need special high-risk insurance, which can be expensive. Read the Product Disclosure Statement. It must cover medical costs and evacuation. Most Australian policies will not cover Syria. The Australian government will not pay. The stamp walk is Can Australians travel to Syria?.
Canada: travel.gc.ca says get insurance that includes medical evacuation and hospital stays, and that evacuation may be hard to arrange. Many Canadian policies will not cover you if you travel where the government says avoid all travel. World Nomads Canada names Syria on its exclusion list, with Iran, Sudan, North Korea, Crimea and Cuba.
France, Germany, the Netherlands: the same mechanism, not a second visa. AXA Assistance France lists Syria on its embargo list and excludes destinations the foreign ministry marks formellement déconseillé on ordinary Voyageo products. German Auslandskrankenversicherung wordings we fetched treat an Auswärtiges Amt Reisewarnung issued before you leave as a foreseeable-war exclusion. A Dutch policy that follows kleurcode rood will not pay. The walks are Can French citizens travel to Syria?, Can Germans travel to Syria?, Can Dutch citizens travel to Syria?. This page is the certificate.
Arabic high-street examples: QNB’s travel product is not valid for planned or actual travel to, from or through Syria (with Afghanistan, Iraq, Cuba, Iran, Sudan, North Korea and Crimea). A Jazeera Airways Arabic add-on names Syria among excluded countries. That is not every Arab policy. Read yours. Arabic search will also hand you Syrian companies selling cover for Syrians going abroad. That is not this trip.
GHIC and EHIC are not this trip. GOV.UK: they cover state care in the EU, Switzerland and a few others — not private bills, not repatriation, not Syria.
What must be in writing?
Three sentences on the certificate, not on a blog:
- Syria is named as a destination you are travelling to.
- Travelling against official advice does not void the policy.
- Emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation / repatriation are in.
Then read what is still out. War and terrorism are often still excluded, even on a specialist or a tour policy. High Risk Voyager’s leisure-only wording we fetched says no war cover on that option. Confirm before you pay.
Take the policy number and the 24-hour phone. Share them with someone at home. GOV.UK asks for both.
Is IATI the only company?
No. Tour blogs in 2026 still name IATI and sell a discount. IATI’s own Syria page still publishes euro tables. On that same page, travellers in February and August 2026 wrote that Syria does not appear in the quote form. IATI staff replied on 27 August 2026 that this cover is not among the products they currently offer. A January 2026 Reddit comment said an EU resident had booked IATI. We will not freeze either as the tourist answer.
UK desks such as High Risk Voyager quote Syria case-by-case. Other specialist desks exist. We do not recommend a company. We do not publish a premium. Confirm the three sentences above before you pay.
Cash at the hospital
The policy pays later, if it pays. The desk in Damascus wants cash now. The US advisory: credit card payment is not available; most hospitals and doctors want cash; private and public hospitals often need payment up front or proof of good insurance before they admit you. That matches Cash in Syria: do not plan on a foreign card. Carry dollars you can spend at a clinic. Evacuation is the expensive part of any claim. Canada says it may be difficult to arrange. Do not freeze a fare.
Is a tour policy required?
No. Independent travellers are not required to buy a tour to be insured. Some operators bundle a local product (Syrian Guides names Traveler Gold with Syrian Kuwaiti Insurance) for group tours. The wording we fetched is complementary: it pays only if no other cover is available. You must notify the alarm centre within 48 hours. War, revolution and terrorism are out. We will not reprint their dollar table as the tourist answer. If a tour includes insurance, read that certificate the same way: Syria named, evacuation in, what is out, how fast you must call.
If this fails
- The quote says worldwide and the small print follows FCDO advice, a Reisewarnung, formellement déconseillé, kleurcode rood, or a sanctions list: do not fly on it.
- The bank or card free travel insurance names Syria among excluded countries: same.
- IATI’s blog still shows tables and the quote form does not name Syria: do not fly on the blog. Confirm on a certificate.
- A farm page sells cheap Syria insurance for a few dollars: ignore it.
- Someone says you need insurance to get the visa stamp: you do not. The fee and the form are on Visa on arrival.
- Someone says one company is the only one: other specialist desks exist. Confirm in writing.
- You cannot get written cover: that is a paperwork problem to solve before the ticket.
What this page will not tell you
Which insurer to buy. A price. That IATI is the only desk, or that it is selling Syria this morning. That you do not need insurance. That a high-street policy is probably fine.
