Getting there

About 45 km north of Homs on the M5, about 30 minutes to an hour. From Aleppo it is about 140 km south, about one and a half to two hours plus checkpoints. Shared vans on the Damascus–Aleppo line stop here. Ask the hotel in Homs which northbound bay; ask in Aleppo which southbound bay. Drop from the garage; bags stay on the car if you are through-running. Older walking notes put the biggest wheels about a kilometre from the centre; walk or a short taxi. There is no airport. Do not plan a train. A fare on a page is not the window. Ask new or old. Sleep is Homs or Aleppo. Getting around Syria has the M5.

A day here

  1. 1Leave Homs north, or drop in from the garage on the M5 on the way to Aleppo. Not a night. Do not book a hotel for the week.
  2. 2Walk the river. Norias. No ticket. They turn when the river is high; walk anyway.
  3. 3Azem Palace if it is open and the wheels left you an hour — operator 2026 often closed Tuesday. Cash pounds. Hama house, not the Damascus first-grade ticket.
  4. 4Back on the road: Homs south or Aleppo north. Last garage seats are not a timetable.
  5. 5Do not add Apamea, Shayzar, or the Dead Cities from here. Krak is a day from Homs.
