Can Germans travel to Syria?

Yes. About US$75 cash at the desk. The Auswärtiges Amt Reisewarnung is insurance and consular help, not the stamp. A Personalausweis will not get you in.

Checked 13 September 2026 against the Auswärtiges Amt Syria page (Stand 26 August 2026, still current that day), the AA FAQ on travel warnings, Decision 128 as reported in Arabic, and 2026 operator tables that put Germany in the US$75 band. The stamp is already on Visa on arrival. Hours for most EU passports sit on Can EU citizens travel to Syria?. This page is a regular German citizen passport. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.

Do German passports get a visa on arrival?

Yes. Cash at Masnaa from Lebanon, Nassib from Jordan, or Damascus airport when the airline boards you. About US$75, cash dollars. Decision 128 names Germany in the US$75 group. Scope and In Your Pocket put Germany in the same band. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Independent travellers do this without a tour. If the airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger, change to Beirut or Amman — Flights to Syria.

The Auswärtiges Amt still publishes a Reisewarnung. That matters for Syria travel insurance and for consular help. It is not the stamp.

Syrien Visum

A Syrien Visum for an ordinary German tourist passport is the desk stamp. About US$75 cash. It is not a Berlin sticker.

The Auswärtiges Amt still writes that you need a visa and that it should be applied for at the Syrian embassy in your country of residence — in Germany, Berlin. We could not confirm that desk as a working tourist route in September 2026. In Your Pocket, summer 2026: Syrian embassies do not currently issue tourist visas. A German passport holder in June 2026 said Berlin did not pick up or reply for weeks. Do not wait on Rauchstraße. The AA listings page still gives Rauchstraße 25. That is an address, not a tourist visa we confirmed.

The old e-visa site, evisa.sy, was inactive in summer 2026. Visa Index still labels Germany “E-Visum.” EntryBrief quotes about US$33 in one table and says the stamp is not extendable. Carry US$75. The table is on Visa on arrival. Fees have been collected at land since 6 July 2025. Some 2026 guides still say land is free. It was. Pay cash dollars.

Will a Personalausweis get me in?

No. The Auswärtiges Amt: a Reisepass will; a Personalausweis will not. Six months left on arrival if you can. One blank page. Clean notes.

A passport that shows travel to Israel — including Allenby (King Hussein Bridge) or Taba in the AA text — may be refused even with a Syrian visa. That fight is on Visa on arrival. Later, a Syria stamp is an ESTA problem, not a Syria problem: Will visiting Syria cancel my ESTA?.

Insurance

A high-street German policy that follows the Reisewarnung will not pay. The Auswärtiges Amt: take an Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung with medical evacuation, and read the Ausschlussklauseln. Ask your Krankenkasse, in those words, whether cover includes a medical flight home. Without it you pay the clinic yourself. The European Health Insurance Card is not this trip. Get Syria named in writing. The certificate is Syria travel insurance. AA: cards still do not pay the clinic. Day-to-day notes are on Cash in Syria.

Consular help

The German embassy in Damascus is closed to visitors. Help inside Syria is extremely limited. Consular work sits with the embassy in Beirut. The official Syria page does not publish a Beirut telephone. Do not plan on a number you found on a blog.

The Auswärtiges Amt FAQ still names a 24-hour switchboard in Berlin: +49 30 5000 0. Confirm it on the official page when you pack. Register the trip on the Krisenvorsorgeliste (Elefand) before you go. Help under the Konsulargesetz can be billed to you. Do not plan on being evacuated.

If you also hold Syrian papers, Syrian authorities will treat you as Syrian. The Auswärtiges Amt: consular help is then regularly not possible. That is a different desk — Dual nationality and Syria travel. This page is the German tourist passport. Carry it when you fly home.

Is a Reisewarnung a ban?

This page is not a lawyer. The Auswärtiges Amt FAQ: a Reisewarnung is not a legal exit ban. It is an urgent appeal not to go, and it is what your insurer and your consular desk will read. Ordinary tourist cash is not a licence application.

A tour booked in Germany is not extra protection. The Auswärtiges Amt says organised trips, including ones sold from Germany, offer no better cover. Independent travellers use these roads. Do I need a tour to visit Syria?.
