Will visiting Syria cancel my ESTA?

Checked 13 September 2026 against CBP’s Visa Waiver Program Improvement Act FAQ, the State Department Visa Waiver page, GOV.UK’s USA entry-requirements page, and one named independent who sat a B1/B2 after a tourist circuit in April 2025. This page is not a lawyer. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.

Yes — if you hold a Visa Waiver passport. Presence in Syria on or after 1 March 2011 makes you ineligible for ESTA. You still go to the United States. You apply for a visitor visa instead. Check your authorisation on CBP’s site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, before you book. Do not fly on an old approval hoping. This is packing for a later US trip, not a reason to skip Syria. The stamp itself is Visa on arrival.

Who does this apply to?

British citizen passports of the kind GOV.UK writes for, most EU passports, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the rest of the Visa Waiver list on travel.state.gov. We will not dump forty country names here. If your passport uses ESTA today, this page is yours. The Australian stamp is Can Australians travel to Syria?. The EU stamp is Can EU citizens travel to Syria?.

US citizens do not use ESTA. Canadians generally do not need ESTA for a tourist trip to the United States. Those are different desks.

The rule is presence, not a tour. On or after 1 March 2011. CBP, State, and GOV.UK all name Syria. Limited exceptions exist for official military or government duty for a Visa Waiver country. A tourist week is not that exception.

A DHS waiver exists on paper, case by case, inside the ESTA process. You do not file a separate waiver form. Do not pack as if you will get one.

What do I do instead?

Check esta.cbp.dhs.gov. CBP says check before you travel. If you have been in Syria, expect ineligibility. CBP also wrote that you may apply for a new ESTA or a visa. The tourist packing is the visa. GOV.UK: travelling on an ESTA when ineligible can lead to detention and deportation. Do not test that.

ESTA denial does not bar you from the United States. CBP: obtain a visa at a US embassy or consulate. Visitor visa: DS-160 on the State Department’s consular site, the fee, an interview. We will not freeze the dollar fee; it moves. Use the embassy that covers where you live. Keep a copy of the ESTA denial; CBP says it may help if you need an expedited appointment for imminent business, medical, or humanitarian travel.

Tell the truth on the form and at the desk: tourism, dates, cities. A forum thread that says hide the stamp is not packing. Misrepresentation is a worse desk.

A Hungarian independent who walked the usual circuit in April 2025 later sat the Budapest interview and received a visitor visa. That is one named trip. CBP says visitor visas can be valid for up to ten years. That is not a promise for your passport.

Dual nationality

This page is a single Visa Waiver tourist passport that visited Syria.

You also hold Syrian nationality: you were already ineligible for ESTA even without the trip. State lists dual nationality of Syria as VWP-ineligible. If this fails

• Your old ESTA still shows approved: check again. Do not board on it after Syria.
• A farm says apply for ESTA anyway and hope for a waiver: the tourist plan is the visitor visa.
• The officer keeps the file: that is their process. This page is not an appointment.
• You only changed planes: CBP writes “present in.” We will not freeze a sterile layover. Ask CBP, or assume the visa.
• A forum says do not mention Syria: do not take that advice.
• US passport, or a Canadian tourist trip to the US: not this page.
• A later student or work visa: different form. Start at travel.state.gov.
• Dual Syrian papers: different desk. Dual nationality and Syria travel.
