Can French citizens travel to Syria?

Checked 13 September 2026 against France Diplomatie’s Syria pages (Sécurité, Entrée / séjour and Santé, all dated 1 July 2026 and still current that day; last-minute alerts 10 September 2026), the Syrian embassy in Paris visa page, Decision 128 as reported in Arabic, and 2026 operator tables that put France in the US$75 band. Do French passports get a visa on arrival?

Yes. Cash at Masnaa from Lebanon, Nassib from Jordan, or Damascus airport when the airline boards you. About US$75, cash dollars. Decision 128 names France in the US$75 group. Scope and In Your Pocket put France in the same band. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Independent travellers do this without a tour. If the airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger, change to Beirut or Amman — Flights to Syria.

France Diplomatie still marks the whole country formellement déconseillé. That matters for Syria travel insurance and for consular help. It is not the stamp.

Visa à l'arrivée Syrie

Visa à l'arrivée Syrie, as a French traveller types it, is cash at the desk. About US$75. It is not a sticker from Rue Vaneau.

France Diplomatie still publishes two visa sentences that do not agree. Entrée / séjour, updated 1 July 2026 and still current on 13 September: you need a valid passport and a visa issued by a Syrian diplomatic or consular mission. The Sécurité page, same date, says that if you go anyway the visa can now be obtained at the border. The working tourist route in 2026 is the second sentence.

The same Entrée page still says a French ordinary passport can only collect a visa on the Lebanon road if you can show Lebanese residence or you entered Lebanon through Beirut airport. Fly into Beirut, then Masnaa. Or use Amman. Do not treat that sentence as a closed Masnaa.

The Syrian embassy in Paris still points at evisa.sy and says it will stop taking visa files. We fetched evisa.sy on 13 September 2026. The title is “EVisa Comming Soon”. There is no form. Do not type a card there. Visa Index still labels France “E-Visa.” Agency pages sell a 90-day sticker, a Paris appointment, or a form from €99. Carry US$75. The table is on Visa on arrival. Fees have been collected at land since 6 July 2025. Some 2026 guides still say land is free. It was. Pay cash dollars.

Do not wait on Rue Vaneau. The embassy contact page still gives 20 Rue Vaneau, 75007. That is an address, not a tourist visa we confirmed.

Will a carte nationale d’identité get me in?

No. France Diplomatie asks for a passeport en cours de validité. A carte nationale d’identité will not do. Six months left on arrival if you can. One blank page. Clean notes.

Anyone who stays more than fifteen days must present themselves to immigration for régularisation — that is France Diplomatie’s Entrée page, not a second fee. Check the ink. If the stamp is 15 days and you planned 21, Syria visa extension.

Insurance

A high-street French policy that follows formellement déconseillé will not pay. France Diplomatie Santé: take an assistance or insurance contract that covers medical costs, including surgery and hospital, and rapatriement sanitaire. The embassy will not pay the clinic. Get Syria named in writing, with medical and evacuation, and that travelling against advice does not void it. The carte européenne d’assurance maladie (CEAM) is not this trip. It covers state care in the EU, Switzerland and a few others — not Syria. Register the trip on Fil d’Ariane before you go. Inscription does not create a duty to intervene. Consular help

The French embassy in Damascus is closed to visitors. It is listed FERMEE. A chargé d’affaires was named in May 2025; the post still sits in Beirut. France Diplomatie: France cannot provide consular services inside Syria. Do not call the old Damascus number on that page.

Help sits with the Consulat général de France in Beirut. The Sécurité page we fetched on 13 September 2026 (update 1 July 2026) publishes +961 1 420 100. The last-minute alerts of 10 September 2026 repeat that number. Confirm it on the official page when you pack. Two emails appear on official pages the same week — admin-francais.beyrouth-fslt@diplomatie.gouv.fr and francais.beyrouth-cslt@diplomatie.gouv.fr. Confirm which is live. Amman is named as a second desk if Beirut cannot take you. Do not plan on being evacuated.

Is formellement déconseillé a ban?
