Syria visa extension

Checked 13 September 2026 against independent 2026 notes in Damascus (including a Belgian traveller that month), In Your Pocket’s summer 2026 red-tape page, and Arabic reporting that still names the Immigration and Passport Administration. Desks move. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.

Can I extend a Syria visa?

Yes. The tourist stamp is often 15 days, sometimes 30. Check it before you leave the border. If you need longer, you extend inside the country. A tour is not required. The first stamp is on Visa on arrival.

Where in Damascus?

Immigration and Passport Administration — Idaret al-Hijra — in al-Merjeh (Marjeh), central Damascus. Ask the hotel for that name. A yellow taxi you priced with kam?, or YallaGo in Syria once you have a Syrian number. The SIM errand is Syria SIM card for foreigners.

Do not confuse this with the Syrian-passport queues in Baramkeh. That is a different building and a different crowd.

When do I go?

Near expiry, not on day one. Independent 2026 notes: the new period starts on the day they stamp. One community guide says some desks handle leftover days differently. Do not gamble. Go a few days before the stamp expires.

What happens?

Passport, the entry stamp, the hotel name written down. Some desks in other cities have asked for a hotel letter; Damascus notes in 2026 did not freeze passport photos. If they ask, a nearby copier will appear. Cash pounds or a few dollars. Ask new or old — that fight is on Cash in Syria.

You request a form, fill it, walk it to another counter, collect stamps, get a new date in the passport. Check the new date before you leave the building.

We will not publish one extension fee. 2026 notes say free, or a couple of dollars, or a small pound figure. Pay, get a receipt if they give one.

Other cities?

Offices exist in the governorates. Independent 2026 notes: they may wait on Damascus. Aleppo notes in August 2026 asked for a hotel letter or a mukhtar paper. Do not freeze that as the Damascus list. If you are not in Damascus, ask that morning, or come back to Marjeh.

Officials told one 2026 traveller that 90 days was the ceiling. Others kept extending month by month. We will not publish a gazette maximum. If the desk says no, leaving and collecting a new stamp is the other door — not a right.

What if I overstay?

Do not. It is still illegal. Some people report a small exit fine. The dollar and pound figures in 2026 guides disagree with each other. We will not freeze one. Leave on time, or extend before the date.

If this fails

• The stamp is 15 days and you planned 21: Marjeh before it expires. The first week on the line is the 7-day Syria itinerary.
• You went on day one and lost the leftover days: that is why you wait until near expiry.
• The other-city office says wait for Damascus: Marjeh, or leave slack.
• They ask for a hotel letter you do not have: hotel stamp or a written address. Try again the next morning.
• The queue is the Syrian passport hall: you are in the wrong building. Marjeh, Idaret al-Hijra.
• A farm page says 7–15 working days online: that is not this walk.
