Krak des Chevaliers on its green ridge: pale limestone walls, sloped inner glacis, and visitors on the path

A Krak des Chevaliers (Qal’at al-Hosn) day trip is a morning from Homs, Syria, not from Damascus. Sleep Homs. Independent travellers do this without a tour. There is no Palmyra-style paper. Cash pounds at the gate — a US card is not the gate. Two hours in the walls. Parts may be roped off. Confirm the last seat back that morning.

Getting there

West of Homs. Distance lists disagree: about 40 km in English and car notes, about 60 km in Arabic pages. By car it is around 45 minutes to an hour. A hired car is the comfortable version; agree the wait and the cash before you leave. Microbuses to al-Hosn exist; they are not a timetable. Wikivoyage and an older local note both had a garage seat from Homs in under an hour. Ask the hotel which bay runs west. Confirm the last seat back that morning. Seats thin out in the afternoon. Damascus is a long day — about US$200 in one 2025 driver quote. Sleep is Homs — that sleeping base is on the Homs page. The seven-day line on this site does Krak, sleeps Homs, then Palmyra. Do not add the coast. Getting around Syria has the fares.

A day here

  1. 1Leave Homs in the morning. Shared car or driver west, to the gate. Not Damascus.
  2. 2Cash pounds at the ticket window. Shoes for the ramps. Water. Allow two hours.
  3. 3Outer walls, then the inner courts. Chapel if they open it — the hall in that court, same ticket, not St George. Some edges have no fence — walk the inner courts if heights bother you. Restoration is listed through 2026–2027; walk what they open.
  4. 4Back to Homs in daylight. Ask that morning when the last garage seat runs. Seats thin out in the afternoon. Hama’s norias are 30 minutes north if you have an hour left. That stop is on the Hama page. They are a stop, not a night.
  5. 5Do not add Tartus or the coast. That holiday is on the Latakia and Tartus pages. St George monastery is on the same road if you have time — modest dress; a 2026 operator list closed it Sunday. Not this castle.
