Getting around Syria
Walk the old cities. In town, price a yellow taxi before you sit, or use YallaGo once you have a Syrian number. Between cities, a garage seat or a hired car. There is no tourist train to lean on.

How do I get around Damascus?
Walk inside the old city. Cars barely fit. Get dropped at a gate — the road by the citadel is the usual taxi point for the main souq — then go on foot. The day is on Damascus.
Yellow taxis: hail one, show the place, ask kam? Agree the price before the door shuts. The meter still shows a number from another decade. Cash in new pounds. If the first quote is silly, take the next car.
YallaGo is the app travellers actually name in 2026. You need a local Syrian number to register — buy the SIM at an official shop; that is on Cash in Syria and Syria SIM card for foreigners. The app shows an estimate. You pay cash pounds at the end. A US Uber account and a US-issued card are not this ride: Levant24’s American visitor in Damascus paid cash pounds. How do I go from Damascus to Aleppo?
The tourist line is the M5: Damascus, Homs or Hama, Aleppo. About five hours plus checkpoints. Shared cars and Pullman buses leave from the northbound garages. In 2026 Arabic reporting still named al-Abbasiyeen and Harasta. Ask the hotel which bay is running north that morning. Seats leave when the car is full. A garage seat to Aleppo has been a handful of dollars to about fifteen, depending on whether the board is still in old pounds. Ask new or old before you pay. Independent 2026 notes and a March 2026 Arabic garage survey disagree on the raw number; they agree it is cheap next to a private car.
YallaGo is the in-town app. Levant24 (7 August 2026) still had the company studying intercity bookings. Arabic launch copy has since advertised governorate rides. That is not a confirmed tourist M5 timetable. The garage is the plan.
A hired car with a driver is the comfortable version of the same road. Operators in 2026 advertised about US$180 for a full day anywhere; independent 2025 day-trip quotes for Krak or Palmyra sat around US$200. Agree the route, waiting time, and cash currency before you leave. You do not need a tour company to buy a seat or a car.
Checkpoints on the highway: passport and stamp out, polite, no photographs of uniforms, then you continue. That is ordinary. Same note as the safety page.
Palmyra, Krak, Bosra, Maaloula
Homs is the sleep on the seven-day line. Krak one morning, Palmyra the other. The sleeping base is on that page.
Maaloula and Saydnaya are a Damascus day in a shared or hired car. Independent 2025 quotes: about US$20 for Saydnaya alone, about US$60–80 if you add Maaloula. The day is on the Maaloula page.
Krak des Chevaliers is a day trip from Homs, not from Damascus. Independent. A long day from Damascus was about US$200 in one 2025 driver quote. The day is on that page.
Palmyra is a day from Homs, on the marked site. Independents have done it. The day — and the paper fight — are on that page. Ask in Homs that morning. If the desk says no, skip it. Last shared seats have been around 2 or 3 pm in a September 2026 independent note; confirm that morning. A hired car from Homs is what most first visits actually do.
Bosra is south of Damascus. Independent travellers use a bus or a driver. Confirm the day’s departure; you may need a night if the last seat is early. The day is on that page.

Can I drive myself? Is there a train?
Car hire exists. A driver who already knows which desk to stop at is the usual first-trip choice. We will not publish a self-drive checklist we have not dual-sourced.
Do not plan on trains. Arabic railway reporting in 2026 still said regular passenger Damascus–Aleppo was not expected soon. A trial train is not a tourist desk. Domestic flights between Damascus and Aleppo are sometimes sold at airline offices; the M5 is the default.
If this fails
- The yellow taxi will not name a price: get out. The next one will.
- YallaGo wants a Syrian number you do not have yet: yellow taxi that morning, SIM at a branded shop after, YallaGo in Syria thereafter.
- The app offers an intercity seat you have not confirmed that morning: take the garage.
- The garage quotes old pounds: divide by 100, or walk to the next window. Same rule as Cash in Syria.
- A checkpoint holds you: wait, papers, no argument, no camera. If they turn the car around, take the other road or wait for morning.
- Someone says Palmyra is closed to independents: believe the desk in Homs that day, not a blog from last year.
