Syria SIM card for foreigners

Checked 13 September 2026 against Syriatel’s own customer-registration list, independent 2026 notes in Damascus, Arabic reporting on eSIM and the second licence, and the cash page on this site. Fees move. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.

Can I buy a Syrian SIM?

Yes. Foreign visitors register a prepaid line at an official Syriatel or MTN branch. Syriatel’s own list of accepted papers includes a valid foreign passport with a new Syria entry stamp (or the equivalent visa paper). Write down the hotel address; the form asks for one. An unlocked phone. Cash pounds, and ask new or old — that fight is on Cash in Syria.

Street stalls sell top-ups. They often cannot register a new foreign line. If the first official desk says no, try another branded branch the next morning, not a kiosk in the souq.

Where do I buy it?

In Damascus, after you sleep. Official Syriatel service centres exist across the governorates — the operator lists 26 plus its boutiques. Ask the hotel which branch is registering foreign passports that morning. 2026 hire notes still named Shaalan, Mezzeh, and around Bab Touma; confirm, do not freeze a street.

Damascus airport has had an operator kiosk after customs, before the public exit. Hours are irregular. Overnight arrivals have found it closed. If it is shut, a yellow taxi that night, official city branch in the morning. A 2026 operator page still mentioned a short complimentary Wi-Fi session at DAM; treat that as a message home, not a week of maps.

You need a Syrian number for YallaGo in Syria. That is the point of the morning errand, not a souvenir SIM.

How much does it cost?

We will not publish one tourist SIM price. A 2026 operator sheet put a new line around 500 new pounds (a few dollars) plus a cheap data pack. Independent notes disagree: a September 2026 backpacker paid about US$30 at the hotel for 16 GB on Syriatel; a late-2025 traveller wrote about €30 for a small pack. This site’s cash page already had hotels and the airport quoting foreigners about US$30–40 for a bundle, and branded shops cheaper. Ask at the desk, pay, get a receipt, test WhatsApp before you leave.

People still quote old and new pounds. Ask before you pay.

Syriatel or MTN?

Either official branch of the two networks. Coverage fights street by street; independent notes said data was enough for maps and messages, slow for video, and it dropped in Aleppo at times. That is ordinary. If the phone takes two SIMs, two lines is a backup, not a requirement.

Shops still said MTN in 2026. Arabic reporting in June 2026 said Zain won the second mobile licence; the regulator talked of a later commercial brand change. Do not wait for a new logo. If the sign has changed, it is still the second operator.

Does Airalo work in Syria?

Do not plan on it. April 2026 comparison pages and other 2026 inventories still had Airalo (and similar international shops) without a working Syria plan. Some content farms still tell you to activate Airalo before you fly. That is the wrong instruction for this country.

Syriatel and MTN sell an eSIM inside Syria. Arabic reporting: MTN launched it in May 2025, Syriatel days later. Activation is at a service centre, not from your sofa abroad. They hand you a paper with a QR code. Keep the paper. If the phone has no eSIM, take a physical card.

If this fails

• The stall cannot register a foreign passport: official branch, next morning.
• The airport kiosk is closed: taxi, sleep, branch after breakfast.
• WhatsApp does not send at the desk: do not leave. Make them finish the pack.
• The quote is in old pounds: divide by 100, or walk next door. Same rule as Cash in Syria.
• Someone sells you a “tourist eSIM” website before you fly: refund if you can. The working line is the branch after the stamp.

What this page will not tell you
