How to get to Syria
Most visitors fly to Beirut or Amman and cross by land. Flying into Damascus works when the airline will board a visa-on-arrival passenger. The land border is the plan that does not depend on a check-in desk.
Checked 13 September 2026 against Arabic reporting on Masnaa hours, independent 2026 overland notes, JETT’s published Amman–Damascus fare (IYP and schedule listings still print about 10 JOD one way, 15 return), Jordan Interior Ministry hours reporting, and airline sites. Times and fares move with fuel and queues. The stamp itself is on Visa on arrival. If a fare below is wrong, tell us.
How do I get from Beirut to Damascus?
This is the usual first arrival. About 120 km. Masnaa on the Lebanese side, Jdeidet Yabous on the Syrian side. Cash US dollars for the Syrian visa at the desk. Steps: Beirut to Damascus.
Hours are not one number. Independent notes in spring 2026 used 06:00–23:00 Syrian time. A Syrian operator later wrote 06:00–midnight for all vehicles. Arabic reporting still describes public cars as 06:00–16:00, with return until midnight. Some 2026 transfer pages write 24/7. That is their booking copy, not a passenger timetable we can confirm. Do not plan to hit Masnaa after mid-afternoon in a shared vehicle. Morning is the working assumption.
| How | 2026 fare (one way) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Private car, Beirut or the airport to a Damascus address | About US$75–150 for the car | About 3–4 hours including the border |
| Shared seat in a booked car | About US$25–75, when the seats fill | Similar |
| Singer Tours bus from Cola station | About US$20–25 | About 3.5 hours. A few days a week; book. Cola about 06:40, Damascus Nahr Aishah about 11:15. Return about 14:00 |
| Local minibuses via Chtoura | About US$10–15 in hops | About 4 hours |
The cheap hops: Cola station in Beirut, minibus to Chtoura (about US$3 in spring 2026). Change money for Syrian pounds in Chtoura if you want. Then either a taxi through to Damascus, or a short servis to Masnaa, Lebanese exit stamp, a few dollars across the pass to Jdeidet Yabous, visa cash, then a minibus towards town. Agree every price before the door shuts.
Coming back into Lebanon, some 2026 guides still say the Lebanese side charges a land entry stamp of about 1,000,000 LBP (about US$12). Lebanese reporting in May 2025 said that land fee was cancelled within a day. Carry small cash. Ask at the desk.
Masnaa is the tourist door from Beirut. Other Lebanon crossings exist; confirm they are taking foreigners that day. Do not make Tripoli your first-arrival plan.
How do I get from Amman to Damascus?
Jaber on the Jordanian side, Nassib on the Syrian side. A longer, flatter road than Beirut. Private cars take about 4–5 hours door to door. Buses take about 5–8 hours. Count 1–2 hours for the two stamps. The step-by-step is Amman to Damascus.
Hours disagree. Interior reporting in March 2025 put Jaber on 24 hours from 23 March. Visit Jordan’s table still prints 08:00–18:00 and also says 24/7. An older Interior notice talks about 22:00. Leave Amman in the morning.
Jordan charges a 10 JOD exit tax at land borders, not at the airport. Independent 2026 notes say it applies if you stayed more than 24 hours; Jordan’s tourism site lists it for land exits generally. Pay in Jordanian cash at the terminal unless the desk waves it. Ask whether a booked car already includes it.
| How | 2026 fare (one way) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private car, Amman to Damascus | About US$140–220 for the vehicle | Fastest. Airport pickup costs more. |
| Shared seat | About 25 JOD, or about US$35–60 depending on the operator | Departs when full |
| Bus (JETT, Al-Kamal, Al-Imbrator and others) | JETT listed about 10 JOD one way, 15 return. Other companies have been dearer, up to about 25 JOD | Several a day. In Damascus they use the street north of Al-Kadam station in the south of the city |
The highway from Nassib into Damascus is about 100 km. You can change leftover dinars after the Syrian stamp.
Are there flights to Damascus?
Damascus International (DAM) and Aleppo (ALP) take international flights. Turkish Airlines sells Istanbul to both. Royal Jordanian flies Amman to Damascus, often more than once a day, and to Aleppo. Qatar Airways sells Doha–Damascus. Syrian carriers may still sell only at their offices, in cash. Schedules change; buy on the airline site, not from a screenshot.
The usual snag is not the runway. It is whether the airline will board you without a visa number. That is a check-in problem, not the Syrian stamp. Confirm in writing, or fly to Beirut or Amman and use the land border. Lines: Flights to Syria. The stamp is Visa on arrival.
DAM to central Damascus is about half an hour. Pay the taxi in cash. Agree the price before you sit.
Can I enter Syria from Turkey by land?
No, not as an ordinary foreign tourist. Some crossings reopened in 2026 for Turkish citizens and for certain Syrians with residence or dual nationality. The Syrian consulate in Istanbul has said non-Syrian citizens may not use the Turkey land posts. Cilvegözü / Bab al-Hawa is not the Masnaa visa desk. Detail: Turkey to Syria by land. Duals: Dual nationality and Syria travel. Fly Istanbul then DAM, or go via Beirut or Amman.
Iraq is not a first-trip arrival. Do not plan it from a forum thread.
What to have in your bag
- Passport, cash US dollars for the visa, and a little extra for taxis.
- Jordan: 10 JOD if you owe the exit tax.
- Lebanon: small cash for the hop fares, and extra in case the land stamp is still collected.
- A second plan: if DAM will not board you, Beirut or Amman the same week.
If this fails
- The airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger: do not argue at the gate. Change to Beirut or Amman and the land border.
- You reach Masnaa after mid-afternoon in a shared car: sleep in Chtoura or Beirut and cross in the morning. A booked private car is more likely to know that day’s hours.
- Jaber is closed for passengers when you arrive: wait for morning. Do not treat 24-hour freight hours as a passenger timetable.
- Singer Tours has no seat that week: use the Chtoura hops or a shared car. Do not invent a second scheduled bus from a screenshot.
What this page will not tell you
A live flight board, or a phone list of drivers. Fares above are a 2026 snapshot, not a quote.
That Masnaa or Nassib is open all night for tourists. The sources disagree; morning is the plan.
That a tour is required. Independent travellers use these roads.
