Flights to Syria
Damascus and Aleppo take international flights. The usual snag is whether the airline will board a visa-on-arrival passenger. Confirm in writing. If they will not, Beirut or Amman and the land border.

On this page
Checked 13 September 2026 against Turkish Airlines’ Damascus and Aleppo pages, Qatar Airways’ Damascus destination page as indexed this session, Royal Jordanian’s booking list and Arabic resume note, In Your Pocket’s summer 2026 visa and airport notes, Syria Scope’s airline-lag paragraph, Syrian Guides’ air-approval line, Against the Compass’s air section, Arabic reporting on Decision 128, flydubai’s Ok-to-board page, and the tables already on Visa on arrival and How to get to Syria. Schedules move. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.
Will the airline board me?
Damascus International (DAM) and Aleppo (ALP) take international flights. The usual snag is not the runway. It is whether the airline will board you without a visa number. That is a check-in problem, not the Syrian stamp.
The Syrian stamp and the airline boarding pass are different systems. Mixing them up is how people get stuck. Immigration at DAM — and often ALP — can still issue a visa on arrival when you land. Some airlines will not let you on the plane because their manuals lag. Confirm in writing that they will board a visa-on-arrival passenger. If they will not, do not argue Timatic at the gate. Change to Beirut or Amman and the land border — Beirut to Damascus and Amman to Damascus. The stamp itself is on Visa on arrival.
Operators who sell tours often write that air always needs pre-approval. Independent 2026 notes also show people collecting a visa at DAM when the airline cooperated. Both can be true in the same week. A tour is not required.
In Your Pocket, in summer 2026, wrote that travellers reported Turkish Airlines, AJet, Royal Jordanian, and DanAir applying visa-on-arrival rules correctly, and problems with Flydubai and Jet Airways. That is a snapshot, not this week’s gate. This session, flydubai still publishes an Ok-to-board process for passports of Egypt, Iraq, Russia, Sudan, and Yemen, with a 48-hour minimum. A 2026 note from a foreign resident in Damascus also said Qatar and other Gulf desks have refused some visa-on-arrival passengers. Qatar Airways sells Doha–Damascus. Confirm in writing anyway. Do not freeze Jet Airways as a live board.
If online check-in asks for a visa number, check in at the airport. The old e-visa site, evisa.sy, returned an error this session and was inactive in summer 2026. Do not buy a “Syria visa” from a random website.
UK, US, Australian and Canadian against-all-travel advice can void a high-street policy. That fight is Syria travel insurance, not the runway.
Damascus or Aleppo?
Both airports take foreigners when the airline boards you. Buy on the airline site, not from a screenshot. Do not treat a weekly farm timetable as the board.
| Hub | What they sell | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Istanbul (IST) | DAM and ALP | Turkish Airlines. About two hours. |
| Amman (AMM) | DAM, often more than once a day, and ALP | Royal Jordanian. Short hop to Damascus. |
| Doha (DOH) | DAM | Qatar Airways. Confirm boarding in writing. |
Independent summer 2026 notes also named AJet and Fly Cham on Turkey–Syria hops. We will not freeze that board here.
From London or the rest of Europe there is no useful direct. You change in Istanbul or Doha, or you fly to Amman, or you fly to Beirut and use the land border. US carriers do not fly Syrian airspace. You buy a foreign airline, or you land and cross.
Turkey by land is not for an ordinary foreign tourist — Turkey to Syria by land. Flying IST–DAM or IST–ALP is the packing.
Syrian carriers may still sell only at their offices, in cash. Against the Compass still writes that. Buy where the airline actually issues the ticket.
If the week starts in Damascus, DAM. If it starts in Aleppo, ALP. The usual circuit starts in Damascus.
What happens at DAM
Pay the visa-on-arrival fee at the bank booth, then the stamp. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Airport arrivals more often report 15. Cash US dollars. Clean notes. The table is on Visa on arrival. Fees have been collected at land as well as at the airport since 6 July 2025. Some 2026 guides still say land is free. That was the earlier rule.
DAM to the centre is about half an hour. Cash taxi. Agree the price before you sit. We will not freeze a pound fare; the notes disagree. YallaGo needs a Syrian number — YallaGo in Syria.
ALP is closer to town than DAM. Cash taxi. Agree the price. The first walking day is on Aleppo.
If this fails
- The airline will not confirm boarding in writing: Beirut or Amman and the land border. Same week.
- Online check-in wants a visa number: the airport desk. If that desk still refuses, do not argue Timatic. Change the ticket.
- A farm prints Qatar on Monday, Friday and Saturday, or Turkish Airlines on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday: buy on the airline site.
- Someone says flydubai is fine for every passport: their own Ok-to-board page is not that sentence. Confirm.
- Someone says you need a tour to fly: you do not, when the airline cooperates.
- Someone says the land visa is free: it was. Pay cash dollars.
- You wanted Hatay and Bab al-Hawa: that is not this packing — Turkey to Syria by land.
- The stamp is shorter than you need: Syria visa extension in Marjeh.
What this page will not tell you
A live flight board, or a fare. Frequencies move. Buy on the airline site.
That your airline will board you this week. Confirm in writing.
A list of twenty carriers. We named the ones we dual-sourced this session.
That a tour is required. Independent travellers fly when the desk cooperates. The walk is Do I need a tour to visit Syria?.
