Beirut to Damascus

How do I get from Beirut to Damascus?

This is the usual first arrival. About 120 km. Masnaa on the Lebanese side, Jdeidet Yabous on the Syrian side. You do it without a tour. Cash US dollars for the Syrian visa at the desk — land is not free. Fees have been collected at land since 6 July 2025. The table is on Visa on arrival.

Hours are not one number. Independent notes in spring 2026 used 06:00–23:00 Syrian time. A Syrian operator later wrote 06:00–midnight. Arabic reporting still describes public cars as 06:00–16:00, with return until midnight. Do not plan to hit Masnaa after mid-afternoon in a shared vehicle. Morning is the working assumption.

Cola to Chtoura to Masnaa

Taxi to Cola station in Beirut. Minibuses sit a short walk from the big coaches. A seat to Chtoura has been about US$3 (about 300,000 Lebanese pounds in spring 2026). About an hour over the mountain.

In Chtoura you can change a little into Syrian pounds. That fight — new notes or old — is on Cash in Syria. Then either a taxi through to Damascus (about US$20–30 a seat when it fills) or a short servis to Masnaa for about a dollar.

At Masnaa, get the Lebanese exit stamp first. Drivers waiting before the stamp can wait. After the Lebanese side, a few dollars across the pass to Jdeidet Yabous. Form, cash visa, stamp. Then a minibus towards town — a few dollars; ask new or old — usually to Somariyeh on the west side. Taxi or another minibus to the old city. Agree every price before the door shuts.

Count about four hours if the window is open. One 2026 hop diary took six with photographs. Do not freeze that as the timetable.

If you land at Beirut airport after lunch, a booked car is the safer window, or sleep in Beirut and Cola in the morning.

Private car or shared seat

A private car from Beirut or the airport to a Damascus address has been about US$75–150 for the vehicle, about three to four hours including the border. A shared seat in a booked car has been about US$25–75 when the seats fill. A February 2026 Reddit note paid US$40 a person in a car from Cola; that is one car, not the quote. Agree the drop-off (old city, Bab Touma, a hotel name) before you sit.

The driver often walks the desks with you. You still pay the visa yourself, in cash dollars.

The Singer bus

Singer Tours has run a coach a few days a week: Cola about 06:40, Damascus Nahr Aishah about 11:15, about US$20–25 one way, about three and a half hours. Return about 14:00. Book. The bus waits at the border. If there is no seat that week, use the hops or a shared car. Do not invent a second scheduled bus from a screenshot.

What happens at Masnaa

Passport, one blank page, six months left if you can. Clean US dollars for the fee on Visa on arrival. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Do not assume 30.

Leave bottles in Beirut. Arabic customs guidance in June 2026: no alcohol in. Some operator pages still mention one bottle. Believe the confiscation. The packing line is on What to wear in Syria.

Masnaa is the tourist door from Beirut. Other Lebanon crossings exist; confirm they are taking foreigners that day. Do not make Tripoli your first-arrival plan.

Coming back to Beirut

Reverse the hops from Somariyeh, or a booked car, or the Singer afternoon coach if it is running. Some 2026 guides still say Lebanon charges a land entry stamp of about 1,000,000 LBP (about US$12). Lebanese reporting on 20 May 2025 said that fee was cancelled the day after it appeared. Carry small cash. Ask at the desk.

If this fails

• You reach Masnaa after mid-afternoon in a shared car: sleep in Chtoura or Beirut and cross in the morning. A booked private car is more likely to know that day’s hours.
• The first desk says the window is shut: same. Morning.
• A farm page sends you to Charles Helou: Cola.
• Someone says the land visa is free: it was. Pay cash dollars. The table is on Visa on arrival.
• Drivers at Masnaa before the Lebanese exit stamp: stamp out first.
• The Syrian minibus quotes old pounds: ask new or old, or take the next car. Same rule as Cash in Syria.
• Singer has no seat: hops or a shared car.
• You want the old city that night: taxi from Somariyeh. The first walking day is on Damascus.
