Amman to Damascus

Which crossing is it?

Jaber on the Jordanian side, Nassib on the Syrian side. North of Amman, then about 100 km of highway into Damascus. A longer, flatter road than Beirut to Damascus. You do it without a tour. Cash US dollars for the Syrian visa at Nassib. Land is not free. Fees have been collected at land since 6 July 2025. The table is on Visa on arrival.

Ramtha exists. Visit Jordan still treats it as mainly cargo. Do not make it your first-arrival plan.

Hours are not one number. Jordan’s Interior Ministry, as reported in March 2025, put Jaber on 24 hours from 23 March, in coordination with the Syrian side. Visit Jordan’s table still prints 08:00–18:00 and, in the same page, says Jaber is open 24/7. Some operator pages still print 08:00–18:00. An older Interior notice still online talks about 22:00. Leave Amman in the morning. Do not treat freight hours as a tourist timetable at 23:00.

Bus, shared seat, or a car?

A private car from Amman to a Damascus address has been about US$140–220 for the vehicle, about four to five hours door to door including the two stamps. Airport pickup at Queen Alia costs more. Agree the drop-off (old city, a hotel name) before you sit. The driver often walks the desks with you. You still pay the visa yourself, in cash dollars.

A shared seat has been about 25 JOD, or about US$35–60 depending on the operator, when the car fills. Count extra time.

The cheap seat is a coach. JETT’s English board this session listed Amman–Damascus daily at 07:00 and 12:00, 10.00 one way and 15.00 return. In Your Pocket writes those figures as Jordanian dinars, and names Al-Kamal and Al-Imbrator as well. Arabic booking farms quote 20–30 JOD. Carry dinars. Confirm at the desk. Buy from the company, not from a screenshot.

A 2026 forum note said JETT sold that run only to Syrian and Lebanese passports, and to people born in Syria. In Your Pocket still lists the bus for the tourist. A UK passport on a 2026 Reddit trip paid 10 JOD and rode it. If the desk refuses a foreign tourist passport, a shared taxi or a booked car. Do not freeze one Amman garage as the only bay.

In Damascus the coaches use the street just north of Al-Kadam station, in the south of the city. Minibus or a taxi into the old city. YallaGo needs a Syrian number — YallaGo in Syria. Agree the city fare before the door shuts. Count five to eight hours on the bus if the window is open. One 2026 seat reported four. Do not freeze that as the timetable.

What happens at Jaber?

Jordan stamps you out. If you stayed in Jordan more than 24 hours, you usually owe a 10 JOD land exit tax. It is not in the air ticket. Independent 2026 notes and a named crossing both used Jordanian cash, often in a small office next to immigration, before the stamp. One traveller under 24 hours was sent back and refunded. Visit Jordan lists the tax for land exits generally. Ask that morning. Ask whether a booked car already includes it.

What happens at Nassib?

Form, cash visa, stamp. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Do not assume 30. A short stay sometimes gets a cheaper transit stamp. We will not freeze that dollar figure. Transit notes are on the visa page. Using a transit visa to return through the same country can mean a fine. If you are staying a week, pay the ordinary tourist fee.

Leave bottles in Amman. Arabic customs guidance in June 2026: no alcohol in. Some operator pages still mention one bottle. Believe the confiscation. The packing line is on What to wear in Syria.

Can I fly instead?

Royal Jordanian sells Amman to Damascus, often a short hop, often more than once a day. In Your Pocket wrote that they were applying visa-on-arrival. Confirm in writing that they will board you without a visa number. If they will not, this road is the plan. The stamp and the boarding pass are different systems — Visa on arrival. The board is Flights to Syria. A live board is not this article.

If you land at Queen Alia after lunch, a booked car is the safer window, or sleep in Amman and leave in the morning.

If this fails

• Jaber looks shut for passengers when you arrive: wait for morning. Do not treat 24-hour freight hours as your timetable.
• Visit Jordan still prints 08:00–18:00: morning was already the plan.
• JETT will not sell a foreign tourist passport: shared taxi or a booked car.
• A farm quotes 20–30 JOD for the coach: JETT’s board and In Your Pocket used about 10. Confirm at the desk.
• Someone says the land visa is free: it was. Pay cash dollars. The table is on Visa on arrival.
• The first desk wants the 10 JOD before the stamp: pay next door, then return.
• You stayed under 24 hours and paid the tax: ask for the refund. One 2026 crossing got it.
• The coach dumps you at Al-Kadam after dark: taxi. The first walking day is on Damascus.
• You wanted Turkey by land: that is not this road — Turkey to Syria by land.
