Turkey to Syria by land

Can foreigners cross from Turkey by land?

No, not with an ordinary US, British, EU, Canadian, or Australian tourist passport. The Syrian consulate in Istanbul has said non-Syrian citizens may not use the Turkey land posts. Independent 2026 notes say the same: overland is for Syrian and Turkish nationals. Operators who still sell a Hatay taxi to foreigners are selling a different desk.

The working tourist land doors remain Lebanon and Jordan — Beirut to Damascus and Amman to Damascus. The stamp itself is on Visa on arrival.

Which posts are those?

The names you will see on maps are Bab al-Hawa (Cilvegözü, Hatay) and Bab al-Salameh (towards Gaziantep), among others. They are northern posts. They are not Masnaa.

Arabic 2025–2026 notices from the crossings authority and the Bab al-Hawa site describe facilitation for Syrian expatriates — a second nationality, or residence outside Turkey — and for Turkish citizens. That is family and return. It is not a visa-on-arrival queue for a first visit. The crossing site’s own FAQ, checked this session, still treats transit requests as stopped. Do not take that WhatsApp as your plan.

How do I go from Istanbul instead?

Fly. Turkish Airlines sells Istanbul (IST) to Damascus and to Aleppo. About two hours. Buy on the airline site, not from a screenshot. Independent summer 2026 notes also named AJet, Fly Cham, Syrian Airlines, and Pegasus to Aleppo. We will not freeze that board here.

The Syrian stamp and the airline boarding pass are different systems. In Your Pocket wrote that Turkey-based carriers were applying visa-on-arrival in summer 2026. The visa page still names airlines whose manuals lag. Confirm in writing that they will board a visa-on-arrival passenger. If they will not, do not argue Timatic at the gate. Change to Beirut or Amman and the land border — Visa on arrival. The board is Flights to Syria.

A tour is not required for the usual circuit. The week is the 7-day Syria itinerary.

Dual nationality

This page is the foreign tourist passport.

You also hold Syrian papers: that is the expatriate desk, not this packing list. The consulate has told dual Syrian–foreign nationals to carry both passports, and to leave Turkey by the same post they entered. We will not walk that form here. You hold a Turkish passport: the consulate’s “no foreigners” sentence does not apply to you in the same way. Confirm at the post that morning. This page is not that stamp.

If this fails

• A farm or a driver in Hatay says foreigners can cross today: the consulate and independent notes still say no. Fly, or Beirut, or Amman.
• You bought an Istanbul–Hatay hop thinking Bab al-Hawa is Masnaa: it is not. Turn around.
• The airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger: Beirut or Amman. Same fail as the visa page.
• You hold only a foreign tourist passport and a forum thread from 2011: that is not a 2026 instruction.
• You are a Syrian expatriate: different desk. Start at the consulate and the crossings authority, not this article.
