Maaloula
A morning from Damascus, Syria. Independently. Last seats early afternoon.
Maaloula, Syria: a morning from Damascus, not a night. Sleep Damascus. Shared van or a hired car; independents do this without a tour. Confirm the last seat back that morning. Modest dress for the churches — shoulders and knees, no mosque robe. Western Aramaic is still spoken here; do not treat people as a language exhibit.
What to see
Getting there
From Damascus it is about 50 to 65 km northeast, about an hour. Not the M5 — that is the Aleppo road. A 2026 car-hire note used the Al-Tall / Qalamoun road. Independents do this. Shared vans leave when full; an independent November 2025 ride waited about 30 minutes, took about an hour, and dropped at St Thecla. A 2026 car-hire page says some buses leave you at a town garage, not the convent steps. Garage names disagree: a 2026 English list still says al-Abbasiyeen for Qalamoun vans; a 2026 visitor page still names al-Sumeria; older Arabic pages name a Maaloula lot in Zablatani, in that north-east cluster. Ask the hotel which bay runs to Maaloula — not the Homs bay. Last seats back have been around 2 or 3 pm in a September 2026 independent note; that is a note, not a timetable. Confirm that morning. Seats thin out in the afternoon. Independent 2025 hired-car quotes sat around US$20 for Saydnaya alone, about US$60–80 if you add Maaloula. There is no shared van between the two villages; Saydnaya is a hired car. If you are on the seven-day line, be back for the northbound garage — Harasta or al-Abbasiyeen — to Homs. Sleep is Damascus unless you continue north. Getting around Syria has the fares.
A day here
- 1Leave Damascus in the morning. Shared van or driver. Not the M5.
- 2St Thecla first — most vans drop here. Grotto. Usually free or a donation. Modest dress.
- 3Stairs to Mar Sarkis, the upper Greek Catholic door. The gorge if it is open. Do not treat people as a language exhibit.
- 4Be on a seat back in early afternoon, or the northbound garage to Homs if you are on the week. Last seats have been around 2 or 3 pm in a September 2026 note — confirm; that is a note, not a timetable. Seats thin out in the afternoon. Feast days fill the lanes; confirm hours that morning.
- 5Do not add Bosra, Mar Musa, or Saydnaya unless the hired car waits. Saydnaya is a different village.
