Do I need a tour to visit Syria?
No. In Syria you do not buy a licensed week for an ordinary US, UK, EU, Canadian or Australian passport. Collect the land stamp and walk the usual line. Pre-approval matters for the airline and for a restricted passport. A hired car is not a licensed group.

Can I go independently?
Yes. In Syria you walk the usual line without a licensed group: Damascus, Homs or Hama, Aleppo, and day trips from that line. Laura Meyers spent nearly a month on those roads. Anna Powaska came in by land, paid cash at Nassib, and booked hotels without Booking.com. Ordinary United States, British, EU, Canadian and Australian passports: form, cash US dollars, stamp at the land desk. No tour. The week is the 7-day Syria itinerary.

Nawafir’s FAQ still says independent travel is not permitted. ToursSyria’s FAQ says the same. Zingy Ride still writes that a licensed guide must walk with you at all times. Those pages sell a tour. They are not the land desk.
Cash. Cards and Booking.com are not how you book. Independents used Google Maps or a local site, then paid cash at the desk. Passport at check-in. Hotels: How to book a hotel in Syria. Independents still day-trip Palmyra from Homs. Laura Meyers did, on a shared van. Ask the Homs desk that morning. If they say no, skip it. Stay on the path.
When do I need pre-approval?
The Syrian stamp and the airline boarding pass are different systems. Mixing them up is how you buy a tour you did not need.
- Land, ordinary US, UK, EU, Canadian or Australian passport, from Lebanon or Jordan: no tour, no pre-approval. Form, cash, stamp. How you reach the desk is How to get to Syria.
- Same passport, flying to Damascus or Aleppo: immigration can still stamp. Some airlines will not board without a prior-approval letter. Get that in writing, or fly to Beirut or Amman and enter by land. The board is Flights to Syria.
- Passport operators flag as restricted: their lists disagree. Get written approval before a non-refundable ticket. We do not print one list as official.
- You want hotels, cars and a running commentary bundled: that is a product you can buy. It is not the entry rule.
Syrian Guides still writes that air always needs a visa-approval document, and they sell that letter only with their tours. Independent 2026 reports also show people collecting a visa at DAM when the airline cooperated. In Your Pocket named Turkish Airlines, AJet, Royal Jordanian and DanAir applying visa-on-arrival, and problems with Flydubai and Jet Airways. Both can be true in the same week. The usual failure is the gate, not the stamp. Fees stay on Visa on arrival.

Driver or tour?
If you wanted a driver, hire a car. Agree the route, the wait, and the cash before you sit. Operators in 2026 advertised about US$180 for a full day; independent 2025 quotes for Krak or Palmyra sat around US$200. That is a car. It is not a licensed group, a running commentary, or a visa letter unless you ask for those separately — Getting around Syria.
If this fails
- A page says a licensed tour is the law: it is not, for ordinary Western passports at land. Laura Meyers and Anna Powaska walked.
- The airline will not board visa-on-arrival: do not argue Timatic at the gate. Beirut or Amman, then the land desk. Or get written pre-approval before you buy the air ticket.
- Operators call your passport restricted: written approval before a non-refundable ticket. Do not treat one operator list as official.
- You wanted a driver only: hire a car. Do not buy a seven-day group to get a steering wheel.
- Booking.com is empty: Maps, walk-in, cash.
