Can Canadians travel to Syria?

Checked 13 September 2026 against travel.gc.ca (Syria advice last updated 1 September 2026), the Emergency Watch page, Decision 128 as reported in Arabic, and the stamp already on Visa on arrival. This page is a regular Canadian citizen passport. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.

Do Canadian passports get a visa on arrival?

Yes. A Canadian passport collects a tourist visa on arrival at Masnaa from Lebanon, Nassib from Jordan, or Damascus airport when the airline boards you. About US$100, cash dollars. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Operator 2026 tables put Canada in a 15-day fee band. Independent travellers do this without a tour.

What visa does a Canadian passport get?

Global Affairs still writes that a non-Arab national cannot collect a visa at the border, and must get one from a Syrian embassy before departure. That is the old sentence. The working tourist route in 2026 is the stamp at the desk. A farm page says Canadians need an e-visa and that visa on arrival is closed. We could not confirm that portal as a working tourist route in September 2026. The old e-visa site was inactive in summer 2026. Carry US$100. The table is on Visa on arrival.

GAC: passport valid six months beyond the day you expect to leave. One blank page. Clean notes. A passport that shows travel to Israel may be refused. That includes some Egypt or Jordan stamps from offices that border Israel. If that is in the booklet, you will be turned away.

GAC still writes a registration at immigration before the 15th day, and that some people need an exit permit. Independent 2026 visa-on-arrival notes did not treat those as the first-morning errand. We will not freeze them. If a desk asks, go. The extension walk is Syria visa extension.

Land or air?

The Syrian stamp and the airline boarding pass are different systems. There is no useful direct from Canada. Istanbul, Amman, Doha, or Beirut then land.

Air: DAM can still issue the visa. Some airlines will not board you without a prior letter because their manuals lag. A February 2026 thread named Flydubai asking a Canadian for a pre-issued visa. Confirm in writing. If they will not, do not argue Timatic at the gate. Change to Beirut or Amman. The board is Flights to Syria.

Insurance and cash

A high-street Canadian policy that follows avoid-all will not pay. World Nomads Canada names Syria on its exclusion list. travel.gc.ca says get cover that includes medical evacuation and hospital stays, and that evacuation may be hard to arrange. Provincial health plans are not this trip. Get Syria named in writing, with medical and evacuation, and that travelling against advice does not void it. The walk is Syria travel insurance. Consular help

There is no Government of Canada office inside Syria. The embassy in Damascus has been closed since 2012. Consular help is extremely limited. The nearest desk is the embassy in Beirut: +961 4 726 700, berut.consular@international.gc.ca. For emergencies at any hour, the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa: +1 613 996 8885 (collect where it works). From Canada or the US: 1-800-387-3124. Middle East email: me-mo.sos@international.gc.ca. Register the trip before you fly. Confirm the numbers when you pack. Do not plan on being evacuated by Ottawa.

Is it illegal for Canadians?

This page is not a lawyer. travel.gc.ca writes for people who choose to travel against avoid-all advice. That is not a ban. Ordinary tourist cash — visa, hotel, taxi — is not a licence application. If your trip is work or journalism, read Global Affairs yourself.

If this fails

• The airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger: Beirut or Amman and the land border.
• A farm says Canadians need an e-visa: the stamp is the working tourist route. Carry US$100.
• GAC says you cannot collect at the border: that is the old sentence. Land desks have been stamping Canadian passports in the 2026 tables.
• The high-street policy excludes Syria: do not fly on it. Syria travel insurance.
• Israeli travel in the passport: you will be turned away. Visa on arrival.
• The stamp is 15 days and you planned 21: Syria visa extension.
• You also hold Syrian papers: that is a different desk. Carry the Canadian passport when you fly home.
