Can British citizens travel to Syria?
Yes. About US$150 cash at the desk. FCDO against-all is insurance and consular help, not the stamp. Land if the airline will not board you.

On this page
Checked 13 September 2026 against GOV.UK (Syria advice still current that day, last updated 2 September 2026, and the entry-requirements page), Decision 128 as reported in Arabic, and the stamp already on Visa on arrival. This page is a full British citizen passport. If a practical detail below is wrong, tell us.
Do UK passports get a visa on arrival?
Yes. A British citizen passport collects a tourist visa on arrival at Masnaa from Lebanon, Nassib from Jordan, or Damascus airport when the airline boards you. About US$150, cash dollars. Check the stamp before you leave the counter: 15 days or 30. Independent travellers do this without a tour.
The FCDO still advises against all travel. That matters for Syria travel insurance and for consular help. It is not the stamp. How the usual circuit feels is on Is Syria safe to visit.
What visa does a UK passport get?
GOV.UK says you must have a visa, and points at an online application of about five to seven days. We could not confirm that portal as a working tourist route in September 2026. The old e-visa site, evisa.sy, was inactive in summer 2026. British travellers have been using the land and airport desks when the airline cooperates. Some tour pages still quote US$140, or say land is free. Fees have been collected at land since 6 July 2025. Carry US$150. The table is on Visa on arrival.
GOV.UK: passport valid three months after the day you arrive. Operator tables and the US advisory say six. Carry six. One blank page. Clean notes.
If you hold Israeli or Iranian citizenship you cannot enter. A passport that shows travel to Israel may be refused. Lebanese dual nationality: GOV.UK says check before you book; Decision 128 lists Lebanon as fee-exempt. That fight is on the visa page.
Land or air?
The Syrian stamp and the airline boarding pass are different systems. There is no useful direct from the UK. Istanbul, Amman, Doha, or Beirut then land.
Land, for a British tourist passport: form, cash, stamp. No tour. The walk from Beirut is Beirut to Damascus. Hours and Amman are on How to get to Syria.
Air: DAM can still issue the visa. Some airlines will not board you without a prior letter because their manuals lag. Confirm in writing. If they will not, do not argue Timatic at the gate. Change to Beirut or Amman. The board is Flights to Syria.
Insurance and cash
A high-street UK policy that follows FCDO against-all will not pay. World Nomads UK and Allianz Assistance UK say so in their own words. Get Syria named in writing, with medical and evacuation, and that travelling against advice does not void it. GHIC and EHIC are not this trip. The walk is Syria travel insurance. Day-to-day notes are on Cash in Syria.
Consular help
There is no British consular desk inside Syria. Embassy operations in Damascus remain suspended. Diplomatic relations were restored; that is not a tourist office. If you need help, call the FCDO in London: +44 20 7008 5000. They may become aware of support from other organisations. Do not plan on being evacuated by the British government. Confirm the number when you pack.
Is it illegal for British citizens?
This page is not a lawyer. GOV.UK writes for people who choose to travel against FCDO advice. That is not a ban. The UK lifted some Syria sector sanctions in April 2025. Designated people and firms remain listed. Do not transact with anyone you know is on that list. Ordinary tourist cash — visa, hotel, taxi — is not a licence application. If your trip is work or journalism, read the Treasury sanctions pages yourself.
Later: the United States
If you later fly to the United States on this British passport, a Syria stamp is an ESTA problem, not a Syria problem. You become ineligible for the visa waiver. Check the authorisation. The walk is Will visiting Syria cancel my ESTA?.
If this fails
- The airline will not board a visa-on-arrival passenger: Beirut or Amman and the land border.
- A tour page says Britons need their group: the land desk is the working tourist route. A tour is not required.
- A farm quotes US$140, or land for free: carry US$150.
- The high-street policy excludes Syria: do not fly on it. Syria travel insurance.
- Israeli or Iranian citizenship, or Israeli travel in the passport: you will be turned away. Visa on arrival.
- GOV.UK’s online form does not complete: that is expected. The stamp is the tourist route.
- You also hold Syrian papers: that is a different desk. The walk is Dual nationality and Syria travel. This page is the British tourist passport. Carry it when you fly home.
What this page will not tell you
That the FCDO will staff a desk in Damascus this month. That GHIC will pay a clinic. That against-all advice is the stamp.
That a tour is required. Independent British passports use these roads.
How we write: How we write.
