Solo female travel in Syria

Is Syria safe for women?

The week is Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, and day trips from that line. Independent women in 2026 booked hotels alone, sat in minibuses, and walked the old cities in the evening. Damascus evenings have women and children in the street. That is ordinary.

A tour is not required. Operators and some English pages still sell a licensed guide as law. Laura Meyers and Anna Powaska walked without one. The week is the 7-day Syria itinerary.

Global Affairs Canada writes that women travelling alone can meet harassment and verbal abuse. That is packing, not a reason to stay home. A shared van can get too familiar. Say no, move seats, take the next car. One independent did, on a Palmyra–Homs van. It stopped. This page is not a crime list.

Insurance still follows the avoid-all advisory. Same paper as everyone else — Syria travel insurance. The stamp is on Visa on arrival.

What do I wear?

Cover shoulders and knees. Loose trousers or a skirt below the knee. A T-shirt is ordinary in Damascus. Leave the crop top at home.

You do not wear it all day on the old-city street. A page that says Syria is “secular, no covering” is the other overclaim. Walk the street you are on.

Idlib and the coast

Idlib is a different morning. Independent 2026 notes used an abaya and a scarf there. Most first visits skip it. If you go, cover more that day.

Hotels at night, buses, walking

Passport at check-in. The desk registers you. Ask them to copy it. Take the booklet back. Do not leave it at reception overnight. Global Affairs and the State Department both write: keep your documents on you. You need the original at checkpoints.

Cheap rooms can share a bathroom. Laura Meyers slept that way on most nights. If you cannot confirm mixed floors, take a room with a lock you can see, or pay for a private bath. This page is not a female-only hotel list.

Pin the hotel before dark. Damascus evenings have women and children. Empty alleys at 1am are not the plan in any city.

Between cities: a garage seat. Keep the passport out for checkpoints. Do not film uniforms. Same note as Getting around Syria.

Photos, hammam, a drink

People: ask. Especially women and children. A shake of the head means no. Uniforms, checkpoints, government buildings: no. The table is on What to wear in Syria.

A hammam is sex-separated. Some doors are men only. Some split the day. Confirm women’s hours at the door. No camera. We do not name a women’s list as still open.

Dual nationality and a Syrian husband

This page is the foreign tourist passport. Keep it on your body.

If you also hold Syrian papers, or you are married to a Syrian man: keep the foreign passport on you anyway. The husband’s file is not your exit. Global Affairs and the US State Department both write that a Syrian husband can take legal steps to stop a wife leaving, whatever her other nationality. Once that order is in, you may not be able to leave.

If this fails

• An operator says you must hire a female guide: you do not. Independents walked.
• Smartraveller said scarf all day: scarf for the mosque. Street Damascus is not Idlib.
• A van is a problem: no, other seat, next car.
• A site says safer than Europe at 11pm: ignore the slogan. Walk the lit streets you would walk in any old city.
• Booking.com is empty: Maps, walk-in, cash. Damascus has hotels near the Umayyad.
• Reception wants to keep the passport: copy, take the original.
